Scholarship levels

I'm curious what the experience of others has been on adjustments, either favorable or unfavorable, to the amount of athletic scholarship funds received in subsequent years. Is it fairly common to get a bump if you contributed to the team or do most players stay more or less the same all four years ? Have you had to initiate a conversation in that regard or is it a conversation most coaches have with players over the summer.
