JJs, it's one thing of body parts to be pressed together by the motion of the swing as energy is transferred/released in a sequential manner ... it's altogether another thing to "bind things together" as others tend to advocate.

That was what I was trying to convey, that the idea of rigidity or binding is unnecessary and a misinterpretation of what the goal of staying connected is about. The goal of staying connected is to get this timing right, now someone with slow fast twitch muscles and loopy action in their swing might benefit from tightening things together physically but it is the resulting timing improvement that is doing the work not the idea of being rigid in any way. Just like someone with a really quick handsy swing might get more powerful with more lag between the segments.

I hear you JJs ... yes, you used the term "not a rigid physical window".

Not understanding why some folks don't understand resistance. I believe it was Yeager who advocated turning more efficiently by trying not to turn. The concept being that during the swing there are muscles that are resisting an action while others that are not ... and as you say, there is a sequential transfer process taking place ... but there is most definitely resistance.

The point and value of connection is that, by binding things together as much as is possible and appropriate given the location of the pitch, you are maximizing the potential energy of the system, which maximizes the bat speed when that force is released.

Complete and Total BullS**t Oleary........."Potential Energy" is derived from a "position or condition" of a particle or system........And has nothing to do with force or torque regarding movement.

A stretched rubber band HAS NO Energy........Is does have "Potential Energy" .........A coiled spring WHEN COMPRESSED has "Potential Energy".........Hell FOOD and OIL have potential energy.........

If I draw my arm back and make a fist to punch you in the face, the position in space that my arm/fist occupy when drawn back have "potential energy".........But is isn't until an unbalance force causes my arm/fist to fly out that energy/force/torque are created..........

Oh and don't take my theoretical example personally........It was just the first thing that came to mind..........:p

BM, I'm having a difficult time envisioning this. Can you please post a demonstration of this?

I'm teasing of course :).

That's potential energy, but not what we are talking about. If you released that force, your arm would fall to your side, not hit me in the face.

A better example of potential energy in your personal violence scenario would be your holding a sledgehammer over my head or cocking and aiming an arrow at me.

JJs … another observation of interest might be that for many swings the rear leg can appear to be locked to the hips during a segment of the swing … yet that isn’t what many speak of as connection.

Just going to leave this here...

1/2mv[SUP]2[/SUP][SUB]a[/SUB]+mgy[SUB]a[/SUB]=1/2mv[SUP]2[/SUP][SUB]b[/SUB]+mgy[SUB]b[/SUB]

Law of Conservation of Energy: E[SUB]a[/SUB]+W=E[SUB]b[/SUB], where W is work.

I would prefer to hold my middle finger back with my thumb and then release it on you nose. Is that potential energy? LOL
