I think catching fly balls is one of the most unpracticed skills. We try to catch a high number of reps every practice. I use a pitching machine to throw fly balls into the outfield (I use regular softballs...no dimples). It is much more consistent then a coach hitting them. Then I set cones at various distances and angles around the area where the ball will drop. This way the kids will get practice catching balls moving at all angles. The pitching machine will put a lot of spin on the ball forcing the fielders to clamp down hard on the catch to prevent it from spinning out of the glove. Then we shoot tons of balls at them. We increase the distance that they have to cover as the drill continues. The girls absolutely loves it and can't get enough reps. Anyway...we can't expect girls to make plays in games if they haven't had literally hundreds of reps in practice.
