They should do it automatically, however, I have heard more than 1 umpire say they wont give it unless the runner attempts to advance. So, wouldnt hurt to go out and question if you feel your runner would have been safe if they had attempted to advance. Depending on their explanation then you may have a case for an argument for the runner advancing and/or a protest.

BTW, when you have an umpire tell you that he refuses to award a base without contact or without an attempt, you only need to know one word, "protest". Understand, you cannot argue whether it was obstruction or not, but once called, you can protest if the umpire does not apply the rule and effects properly.
