That said, I do think that the smaller field makes it easier since there's less ground to cover in the outfield. The larger the field, the greater athletic requirement.

I's not just outfield dimensions that make a difference. Geometry dictates that you have to be more accurate throwing on the larger infield. A ball thrown from the hole at short that is two feet off the mark on the little diamond becomes uncatchable once it travels the extra distance of the large diamond.
