Unlike softballs, soccer balls can rise. As a freshman college keeper, I saw a ball hit that traveled low, then seemly jumped up, through my fingertips and into my face!

Someone needs to calculate ball circumference ( 12")and distance (40ft) to determine the spin rate for an effect rise that can move with such magnitude....... I mean truly move. I am sure it's out there but I purged my physics knowledge a long time ago.

The effect is different for smooth-surfaced objects. I would love to see someone drop a spinning softball far/long enough for it to accelerate to terminal velocity and see what it does though.

Ken, One of those guys probably kicked the ball. Look at how these soccer balls curve. Man if only I could get dd's curve ball to curve like this!

"Hit" is about as common as "struck." "Kicked" might actually be less common.
