Are you talking about D1 athletes with athletic scholarships?
If 'no', then they can do pretty much whatever they want, although coaches may have their own policies regarding this question.
If 'yes', then the players should speak directly to their school's NCAA compliance officer about any questions involving income. That individual is the ONLY person they should take guidance from on this matter.
