2nd baseman thought we had 2 outs with a runner on first. Ground ball hit to her and the runner on 1st wasn't much further off the base than a regular lead off and did not attempt to run to 2nd. 2nd baseman threw the ball to first to get the batter/runner out. Runner retreated back to 1st ( I can only assume she was trying to avoid a tag by 2nd baseman?)

Batter/runner was called out. 1st baseman had no idea what the runner was doing and didn't tag her while she was off the base.

My parents were going bananas saying that runner had to run to second and should be out on return to first.

I say the runner can do whatever she wants because the batter/runner is not in play anymore as she was called out.

Who is right?

And just in case the previous two responses didn't cement it, you were correct. The force was off as soon as the batter-runner was retired.

As far as doing "whatever she wants", well, as long as she doesn't violate some other rule, sure.
