It seems that to be a hitting coach for most mlb teams you have to have been drafted, then have a big BUT.

"He was picked 12th BUT only played one year in the majors"
"He had a low batting average BUT did walk a lot"
"He only played 6 months in the majors BUT did spent 90 years in the minors."
"He hit 69 home runs BUT....."

Of course I am exaggerating a little bit.

Where does Mark McGwire fit into your list? ;)

How about ...

''He struck out once every four at-bats in eight big-league seasons, BUT ... ''

Jim Presley Statistics and History - Baseball-Reference.com

That doesn't mean he can't be a good hitting coach, but still.

Presley has decent stats... 8 years majors, low to mid avg, BUT only 2 years with a positive WAR.

(Don't take me too serious on this thread)

I know, I wasn't being all that serious myself. You don't have to be a great hitter in MLB to be a good hitting coach. A decent MLB hitter is still a world-class hitter.

My guess is the real deal mlb hitting instructors are in the Dominican Republic.
