For the U.S. women's indoor volleyball program, "almost" had long been the most exasperating of words. The world championship of the sport began for women in 1952, and the Olympic tournament started with the 1964 Summer Games. The Americans had never won a gold medal in either competition.

Until Sunday. At the FIVB World Championship gold-medal match in Milan, Italy, the United States finally got to be the last team celebrating. The Americans beat China 3-1 for their first world title.

And an emotional U.S. coach Karch Kiraly summed it up: "Sixty-two years. ... The USA was due."
