Here is the piece that seems to be missing. A Foul Ball by definition is a Dead Ball. Once the ball is declared foul, no further plays are available. MTR posted the applicable rule references from USA SB and NFHS.
By rule, a batted ball that goes sharp and direct to the catchers glove or hand and is caught is a foul tip and a live ball. If the batted ball hits any other part of the catchers body or equipment before the hand or glove, it is a foul ball and dead at that instant. A batted ball that first hits the catchers knee is a foul ball, the ball is dead and cannot be caught for an out.
Before anybody asks...A batted ball that is caught in flight over foul ground before touching the catcher anywhere other than the hand or glove, the umpire, or any other object in foul territory is not yet a foul ball by rule definition. It is a live ball that can be caught for an out.
