So, your varsity team has 4 starters still playing basketball (playoffs).....you have your #1 pitcher and catcher, would you go ahead and play in a fairly tournament....have 10 total right now and 9 are either freshman / sophomores...your thoughts... I want them to play in it ...IMO...thanks

Absolutely you play in it. That would be a terrible coaching decision to say to the team "well, without these 4 starters, we really not that good, so we not going to play"........And if you lose 2-3 games for it, so be it, you have a good team, you will overcome it.

I think as long as you can field a team (meaning you're not putting people out of position to some unreasonable degree) and you're not signing yourself up to lose 20-0 every game, why not? You'd be surprised how often the "shorthanded" team actually wins.

Now, if we're talking being so far out of your depth that it might be dangerous for some of those Freshmen or something, maybe not.

Absolutely play. Getting starting reps for your younger players is valuable experience, regardless of the numbers on the scoreboard. You might also find yourself surprised by who steps up and shows you what they can do when given a chance.
