We got to make an out of town ER trip this weekend. DD didn't go to school today; she still has a headache.

This time was pretty darned scary. She couldn't remember her birthdate or home phone number when they asked at the hospital. For probably an hour or two she just wasn't herself and then she started coming back to life.

The ER doc said no softball competition for 2 weeks and maybe she should consider no more softball ever. She told us, "No, no, no. I'm not giving up softball." I know she loves the game, but she needs to keep her brain!

She's on a Worth team, but I'm considering asking her coach if there's any way she could wear a catching helmet from a different manufacturer. Does anyone know if those Wilson FX Shock Helmets with the shock absorbers really work better than the others?

We've also got to get her to her doctor or perhaps a sports doc/neurologist locally to get her looked over more thoroughly IMO. And depending on what the docs say, maybe we're going to have to make her give it up. That would be a terrible blow to her.

Take care out there!

Oh wow.I was going to suggest a different position but I'm not even sure that is safe. My son played ice hockey and he's had two concussions. He doesn't play anymore. It's just not worth it. I'm not even sure if I would be comfortable with a different helmet. He never even had it that bad where he forgot something. That's downright scary.

Another position would be safer; every concussion or assumed concussion I can remember her having has happened while catching.

She might have to drop down from A ball to start at third or first, or settle for occasional playing time and a DP role. It's an idea to discuss with her though.

She's a smart kid with a bright future past softball. I definitely want her to stay that way. Maybe we should start encouraging her to spend more time on Robotics, Scholar Bowl and her cello. :-D

No helmet is going to be 100% effective, because none of them can keep your kid's brain from sloshing around inside her skull. The most they can do is minimize the amount that her head whips around when she gets hit.

Bummer! I don't think my dd has had one, but she took one a couple years ago that rang her bell, couldn't see or hear for about 20 seconds.
I did see our girls were in the same bracket about 3 weeks ago, wish I would have gone now.

2 weeks off is not enough. Talk to doctor but she needs to rest for at least a couple months. She will play again if she wants to and C. SB is a contact sport and bad things happen sometimes.

I would find it hard to believe that the equipment would make a difference but that is a good question.

So sorry to hear :( :(

Id find a specialist in concussions-Childrens Mercy or KU perhaps.

There are great medical minds that may be able to give you a path back into the game. Well be praying for your DD-such a smart young lady.

I believe 100% in the Wilson Shock FX helmet, but I also know that a kid who has had concussions in the past is more prone to future concussions. I'd be switching positions in her shoes. Nothing is worth that risk.
