In a recent 14U USSSA tournament the opposing team batted out of order:

- #5 batter made final out of the first inning
- with nobody out, #7 batter singled to lead off the 2nd inning
- #6 batter took first pitch for a strike...our team claimed the opposing team was batting out of order

The ump ruled #6 batter out and that #8 batter should bat next. Was this the correct ruling?

#7 at bat was made legal when a pitch was thrown to the next batter. #8 is the correct batter and assumes the 0-1 count.

You needed to appeal the batting out of order prior to the pitch being thrown to the next batter, or, since #6 was also out of order wait for them to complete their at bat and then appeal it.

If the #1 batter had hit instead of #7 would the #2 be up next?

If I understand you correctly, you are changing the situation to this:

- #5 batter made final out of the first inning
- with nobody out, #1 batter singled to lead off the 2nd inning
- #6 batter took first pitch for a strike...our team claimed the opposing team was batting out of order

Once a pitch was thrown to the #6 batter, the previous batter (#1) is legal.
If the BOO is brought up at this time, the next proper batter is the #2 batter (since the pitch made the #1 batter legal)
The #2 batter would be brought to the plate with an 0-1 count.

If the batting out of order appeal had been made prior to the pitch, the #6 batter would be declared out for failing to bat in her proper position, the #1 batter would be removed from first base, and the #7 batter is due up with one out.
