I'm guessing that the umpire was relatively new. One for allowing the coach to persuade him and two for not knowing the rule.
First off, there is no such thing as "presenting the ball" in the rules, it may be in the hand or the glove. Second, the umpire has no choice but to get the UIC if the coach tells them they are protesting a rules application.
Had a USFA ump pull something similar on DD a last year in 12U. DD adapted and did well.
Our other pitcher mocked him a little by being dramatic and making an exaggerated move out of the presentation. Almost like a theater bow if you can picture that.

Exactly! We have no reasonable recourse for rogue umps and they are more common than most would think.
I suspect it is the classic little man complex. They get crapped on at work, at home, and in life, but the field is the one place they can exercise their will on others. These guys and gals always seem to have a chip on the shoulder. Of course, your mileage may vary......
