Eastland is a pretty small school. Don't know what kind of schedule they played.

The record for strikeouts in a game is 38. Karen Marie Pena, (Go 18!), of Alleman H.S. did it in a 22 innings in 1999.

Suzi Rzegocki of suburban Lemont also fanned 38 in a 20 inning game in 2007.

KMP still has it, couple years ago I got to take some cuts against her and she made me look silly. I couldn't wipe the smile off my face, it was so cool.

Humpty: DD was about 4'6"-4'8" 85 lbs at 10U....a bit taller than average but a skinny little thing. She gains 1-2 mph per year in speed but the spin rate on the ball for her movement pitching improves.

She will never be a 60+ flamethrower. In fact if she plays in college it will be as an outfielder not a pitcher....just too small and not enough heat.

I would much rather hear someone's DD averages 10-15 strikeouts per game as opposed to perceived speed. Speed is not everything without movement your DD is going to get a sore neck as she turns to watch the ball fly out of the park. Strike Outs matter more to me!!!! Just my .02 cents.

I disagree that strike outs matter that much - especially if combined with a bunch of walks, wild pitches and some big hits off some waist level fast balls.

It is all about outs. 18 weak ground balls and easy popups provide the exact same result as a bunch of strike outs. It is especially important in the transition to 12U for 10U pitchers that they understand how to get batters out - too many 10U strike out pitchers can't succeed in 12U because they can't strike out batters when they go back to 40' and the bigger ball.

I live about 10 min from Chelsea Sundberg and have watched her pitch numerous times. I watched her in a tournament game one time and she struck out 20 of the 21 batters. High school batters couldn't touch her. It was amazing to watch

I personally like the pitches per game. DD averages 47 pitches per game pitching about 49mph in 14U. Speed and K's only get you so far. Move the ball, hit your spots and let the defense make the play. Strike/ball ratio is a good indicator as well.

I know of 5 teams in our area that have girls that can throw 50+. Of these three can do it regularly in games. I'm sure there are more in neighboring states. Average good pitching around here is probably 43-45 though.

Rambler if she can't do it in a game does it really count. And if she is only hitting 50 a cpl times a game is she really a pitcher that throws 50? I know there's some kids out there that can do it I just haven't seen it yet. I took the gun to the tournament this weekend. I had heard a team had a kid that was throwing 49-50. She finally pitched on Sunday she hit 47 4 pitches in a row. There was a big kid that pitched hit 50 once with a warmup pitch but was 44-46 when pitching to a batter. The 3 best pitchers were 44-46 with good change ups and they hit their spots well. Maybe fl is behind.

Having been to many nationals and seeing an awful lot of high level softball I can guarantee you that Florida is not behind anyone except California (and the gap isn't quite as big as it used to be).

It is all an ego thing. And how you define 'pitching 50' is different from person to person - in practice, once in practice, looks like 50, actually throws 50, measured in kilometers, someone said she did, used a badly calibrated radar gun, used the gun wrong, flat out lies, actually does in a game every now and then, does it in the game regularly... etc, etc, etc..

If the batter is out it isn't massively important how it happened. You don't get extra strikes per pitch just for throwing harder than someone else.

I know I know I'm making it out to be a big deal. Maybe ill be satisfied when I see it. I was really impressed with a first year 14u pitcher lefty throwing a screw, a curve, and a drop. I clocked her at 50-52. She was deadly accurate.

All I know is this....Pitching is a cat and mouse game. It is about trying to game the hitter. Speed matters early in 10U. Then all of the sudden we learn movement becomes important. So in the end a fastball becomes a set up pitch. I have seen 13 yo's who are already in the high 50's and occasionally topping 60. It is a cool things to see. What is even cooler....Seeing their Curveball move dramatically. My favorite was this past fall when I would have parents tell me to pitch certain kids changeups becasue as they put it, "they always miss the change up." What the parent did not realize was that their 12U daighter was faling victim to solid pitchers who could pitch a good curveball. Good luck with this one. I see speed as cool but in the end good hitters are ones who can be patient and adjust. I have seen speed hold batters at bay for one at bat only to have them come in later in the game and start crushing the pitcher's speed and earning a win.
