The back leg drag as well as front side resistance. Help... Any thoughts. I think she does a lot right but those are two of the big ones. Also knee up and out instead of straight leg soldier. She is a first year 12u so be gentle.

I'm not an expert, but she looks pretty decent.

One thing that sticks out to me is the drive leg stays behind her as she releases the ball. Many elite pitchers bring that leg in with them, knees approaching side by side as the ball is released.

Her front side resistance is pretty good...the trouble she doesn't have much need for front side resistance. Her leg drive is almost zero.

Java did a tremendous job on this thread about leg drive. The authoritative resource on leg drive is here:

Leg Drive Thread

Attached are images of great leg drive. (Amanda Scarborough has probably the best leg drive I've seen.)

An image of your DD is attached. Your DD is basically "pretending" to do leg drive...her left leg is vertical, but she bends at the waist to give the illusion of leg drive.

She has a couple of other issues.

She swims with the glove hand. She recovers nicely, but it might be problems when she gets older and she really starts throwing the ball.

Her forearm pronation is a little late. It will likely "fix itself" as she practices.

Bottom line: Go to work on leg drive. Use Java's excellent thread.

Thanks for the help. I guess I don't completely understand leg drive. If you watch her leap off the mound she gets pretty good distance isn't that using her legs? I have seen the two step drill but I guess I don't really get it.

I think she looks good, from what i can see, but what will help is some better video. Get one from the back and one from the throwing arm side. Maybe folks can see a little better what's happening.

Distance has little to do with leg drive, honestly. Or rather, distance she travels isn't a great measurement for leg drive. In other words, a girl can leap up and out and get great distance. However most of that leg energy is directed up, thus isn't a true leg drive.

From what I see, most of your DD's leg energy is directed up rather than out. Read about the "H" positions here: https://www.discussfastpitch.com/softball-pitching/29728-second-h-kick-out.html

I would guess from watching the vids your DD has had a coach at some point that emphasizes the big stride leg kick, driving the foot up, or something similar. This isn't the best way to drive as it naturally directs energy up. I call it reaching with the stride leg rather than driving with the drive leg.

One of my favorite gifs of a great drive (aside anything from Amanda Scarborough or Ueno) is Tatum Edwards. https://www.discussfastpitch.com/softball-pitching/5208-model-pitchers-20.html#post290862

Notice how her stride leg never gets that "kick the door down" position, how her stride KNEE is what drives forward, and how much of her drive energy is TOWARD the catcher and not UP.

Ok so distance isn't really the goal but starting her momentum forward with the knee leading is the key?
