yeah this is confusing....there's also a lot of use of cryotherapy (extreme cold) in ML sports top reduce inflammation and speed recovery....so does cold help healing or no??

Ice for an active pitcher during a game? Ridiculous.

Icing an injury for a short time is one thing, but I've seen it way overused recently, especially during school ball. After a school ball game a week ago, more than half the kids came out with ice taped to their shoulders.

When I was younger, I had the same muscle tear on different legs six months apart. The second time, I applied ice for only a short time, and warmth and compression thereafter. The recovery time for the second injury was much quicker, and I didn't experience the horrific cramp that extended ice application caused the first time.

Paradigm Shifts: Use of Ice & NSAIDs Post Acute Soft Tissue Injuries (Part 1 of 2) - PHYSICAL THERAPY WEB

A couple articles to read. Mind you I have no dog in this fight. In fact up until a few months ago my daughter used ice on her shoulder and forearm after pitching. (It was a cool wrap around all in one which makes me sad not to use it anymore LOL). But my history has been in Exercise physiology and I try to keep up on the constantly changing environment. Much like nutrition- eggs are good, no bad, no just egg whites, no the whole egg...it is always evolving. But for me the current studies lead me to believe in no ICE, and some specific exercise related cool down after pitching

12u daughter has a new club coach. She is suggesting ice on her shoulder between innings. That sounds bizarre to me.

My daughter has been pitching for three years, never had pain or injury. She doesn't ice after pitching, though her pitching coach advocates it. My feeling is that if she consistently feels good, her body must be doing what it needs to do and there is no reason to use ice to inhibit the natural healing process after a workout. So we are not ice fans to begin with. I understand there are different schools of thought on this.

But this middle of the game thing sounds crazy to me. Wouldn't that tighten you up? Anyone ever hear of this?

Have you ever seen a MLB pitcher ice their arm between innings? That should tell you everything you need to know. Your DD may need a new club coach...

According our trainers information on football players, ice baths are great to get your body temp done and restore normal function faster. This allows for the body to have less stress for a shorter period of time and helps prevent swelling that may occur. I have no clue. If you have injuries and make football players get in an ice bath they get better fast in my experience because they hate it. Lol

I am 98.2% sure that the ice baths you are describing are done AFTER the game, not between innings as the OP mentioned. Have you EVER seen a football player taking an ice bath during a game?

Of course after a game or practice but have seen them take ice baths during games and practice to prevent a heat stroke.

[sarcasm font on] After taking an ice bath to prevent heat stroke does the player return to the game or practice, or do they call it a day? [sarcasm font off]
