At the 10U travel level, unless you are throwing 52-56 you will need to locate the ball, location location location and have an effective change up, even if you dont throw it for a strike all the time, just let the other team know you have one, and the need to look out for it and respect it, most young girls dont know how to handle outside pitches at this age. My DD threw hard, she threw 55-56, very effective but against top teams we had to mix in other pitches, a good change up is a young pitchers best friend. Moving up to 12U speed is really not a factor for a first year player especially, you have to spin the now, that fastball will get banged.

How many kids throw it 52-56 at 10u? Jennie Finch's top speed at age 10 was 53 and that was probably a one pitch max and not a cruising speed number. In my neck of the woods PA/NJ/NY/MD/DE/VA, of the kids I've seen at this age, the best, might hit 50-51 if they are "older" 10s (meaning Jan/Feb of their birth year). Maybe there is one kid in the country who could hit 56 (again, probably just a one pitch max, not in a game) in 10u, but I'll file that in the "I'll believe it when I see it category".

At PGF this year in Huntington Beach there was a kid who hit 61 from Indiana she is on the on the TN Mojo team that won it all, a kid throwing over 53MPH is not unheard of in 10U out here. There were at least 10 kids at PGF over 52 this year in 10U, and yes my kid is a Jan 05 great softball birthday.

This is simply not true. Yes there are girls that throw mid fifties at 10u but they are very few and far between and you will only see them here and there. The VAST majority of 10U travel ball players on very very good teams are still mid to high 40s and are very effective. 56 mph from a release point of about 30 feet is like hitting a 90+ mph fastball. Girls that throw this hard at 10u dominate everyone until they face a top 5 national team.

Last year older DD was probably throwing 54 and she would pitch batting practice to little DDs 10u team (finished 9th at pgf last year) and no one could keep the ball in fair territory from 40 feet. You post makes it sound like you have to throw that fast to compete in TB at 10u when a more proper statement is you need to throw that fast to WIN PGF at 10U.

You dont have to throw that hard to be competitive in 10U at all, but the top teams we played against had at least one girl, in some instances 2 that were over 52, and yes there are still some good teams with pitchers who throw in the mid-40's, actually my team would rather face a faster pitcher, we seemed to hit better of of 52 then 45, these girls are becoming so strong and work so hard, what they can do is very impressive.

I'm sorry but those numbers seem pretty high to be "competitive" for 10U. Even for national events, teams with more than one girl throwing over 50-52 seems to be more of an anomaly at 10U. Especially when watching a 14U Gold pitcher last night (not my DD but at same facility) throw 56-59. And her dad stated the fastest they saw all year was probably around 62. No they didn't go to the PGF but did go to Colorado, New York, etc and played a ton of those same teams and have D1 committed girls on the team. Including SEC caliber. Maybe your location has that, So Cal or major city with hot softball talent. But that seems extremely rare.

SyndreSoftball is in SoCal.

Last year in 10U, my DD's team had one pitcher who could hit 50-51 with good control and a couple of decent alternate pitches. It was not at all uncommon to see faster pitching.

Those aren't the numbers to be competitive, I was as surprised as every one else actually, the talent I have seen from the top 05 teams and players this year blew me away. I am in So Cal, but I will say we played a team form GA and TX this year and they were very good, with pitchers who threw over 51 as well.

How many? More than you can believe, apparently. ;)

We were at PGF with two pitchers over 50. Tenn Mojo looked like they were all over 50 but I didn't see anything that looked like 61 from them. BTW; the Mojo team sure had some good hitters on it. You could still do really will if you could spin the ball and change speeds.

Over 50 wasn't all that uncommon down there from the games I watched. More surprised at how few change ups that were being thrown.

LOL! I guess, when you consider that a Jan-Aug 05 birth is a 2023 and a Sept-Dec 06 is a 2025, there can be a huge difference in ages (almost two full years in some cases). My DD falls into the 2025, but was playing against 2023 kids. So for travel ball purposes, she'll always be the young kid, but for school ball she'll always be the oldest. I prefer it that way.
