So sometimes the front leg blocks but not all the time? And what do you mean by independently? Thanks.

The front leg always blocks or in better words stop the shift forward....... If the front leg doesn't block the forward momentum "Hip Slide" will take place or the body will continue to move forward and that is frowned upon. I believe what is meant by "Independent Front Leg" is just that...... It moves independently without influence from anything else.... They have two basic belief's about the front leg, some believe it has an Independent action and some believe it is opened/rotated by the back leg turning in. I have heard one person describe it as keeping pressure in between the inner thighs meaning the back leg internal rotation forces the front leg into external rotation. For example if you stuck a ball between your legs the ball would stay until the swing is complete..... The independent crowd believes the front leg will rotate on its own and the ball would fall out going into heel plant or stride...... I hope this helps clarify it some for you.

I believe what RDBASS meant by catch/block is that some hitters have more forward momentum than others like Bonds compared to Bellinger for example. So one may look at Bonds as more of a catch and Bellinger more as a block. I do not what to put words in RDBASS mouth so hopefully he will clarify.

I was told the other day in a post on here that the front leg can work independently if it needs to. Is that right?

In my opinion, of course it can. The body will do whatever it feels it needs to do to accomplish the set goal. To me the real question is what is the most optimal way to hit a softball?

WRT the bold..... To me that says a lot of different factors come into play. Lets say a hitter was totally fooled on a pitch the body would react to the situation at hand to try and achieve the goal of hitting the ball which may or may not include an independent front leg action. I believe on this particular forum the high majority does not believe in an independent front leg.

Ok. But isnt it said that the rear hip is what controls the front hip being independent or not? Doesn't that happen early in the swing a long time before a hitter may be fooled?

Not sure if I understand your question or not but I will give it a shot...... First I am not sure what you mean when you write hip.... the hip as referred to on this forum is actually the pelvis, most of the time depending on context (I believe), and it is a 1 piece bone so one side can't be independent of the other. What I was trying to get across earlier about the example is that if a hitter is moving out (striding) and keeping pressure between their legs and is fooled the leg can take on an independent action at any point during the sequence of movements. So yes a hitter can have an independent front leg during the entire process or just part of the process.
