Rdbass, if someone instructs players saying that I'm teaching the X portion of the swing today ... and you go home and can't find X to be part of the swing as you view video ... then don't you think that person has a right to scratch their head regarding the legitimacy of X? I do.

Slow motion video may cause you to see movement that may not be happening the way you think it may be happening while viewing it in slow-mo. I'm hoping that makes some sense.
My only point was that while watching slow-mo video one poster can see this hitter 'slotting' his elbow and then turning the barrel towards the ball. Another poster can see this hitter using his hands to turning the barrel towards the ball as the swing slots his elbow. Another poster can view slow-mo or real time video and see the same swing sequences stated above. A poster is going to see what they want to see or think they see until they pick up a bat and actually feel it.

Sorry not taking this bat/barrel path to a ball in this zone. Opinion without known the intent of this drill:

I'm guessing I'd like to 'square' this ball up with the 'meat' of the a barrel.

Keep in mind that the ball here is above the hitter's knees.

I agree with you and stated that this would not be the barrel path that I would like to see nor instruct. The lead arm 'jut' also isn't to my liking.
Again, I don't know the intent nor purpose of the drill.
My previous comments were for possible problems that can a rise if a poster just relies on slow-mo videos.

Very good point that you need to pick up a bat and swing ..... and I believe Julray is doing that .... he's also trying to close the loop and seek verification through analysis of the hitting video of the best hitters out there.

I understand. The concern though is that instead of answering that question, folks simply poo poo'd the Hanson Principle.

You are absolutely correct about it being important to swing a bat.

People who work with a lot of kids know how important doing an exaggeration drill like this really is. When you have a kid who has taken 10,000 swings in their life with the thought process of "throw my knob at the ball" you will understand how tough of a thing it is to change their movement pattern.

I ask some kids to do exactly that movement. We do it with a pvc pipe, we hit balls of a tee, we do front toss snap stops like this. I tell them it is an exaggeration but the purpose is to get them to feel their forearms. IMO having them perform this exaggeration teaches kids to trust a "different" way to deliver their barrel to the baseball.

Hanson Principle:
“Always compare what anybody tells you about the swing to slow motion clips of the best hitters in the world”.
-- Mark Hanson

With regard to the Hanson Principle should this drill not be performed because the barrel path doesn't match slow motion game swings of the best?

I never liked the drill, although when he switches to swinging normally he doesn't make the same swing.

Very true.

The action of binding the lead arm as shown in the demonstration, in a full swing performed at game like speed, would be painful ... and over time potentially damaging.
