you Need to have the correct Barrel angle for each pitch height similar to a clock handle starting at the front shoulder. The grip should stay up (a Little lower on low pitch but not below stomach height or so) and the height is adjusted with the bathead and not the handle. bat angle changes. Shoulder axis also will tilt more or less so that the bat is roughly in line with the shoulders.

Ive got a major DBSFer. Recently I watched swing builders whip drill on eric fs youtube channel. It helped a lot. You cant DBSF if you "whip the bat RIGHT NOW". Doing this drill help my DBSFer with feel and i actually saw her front side mechanics improve, her front elbow actually started to work up to the hight of her mouth. Brought a tear to my eye.

So am I to assume the feedback on this is where the bat ends up..e.g. should be right back to the pitcher if done correctly?

The important aspect is that the barrel is launched/whipped RIGHTNOW!!! from the shoulder. Where the bat lands is not a significant concern. Doing some reps without body rotation (as SB does at the beginning) is probably the most beneficial part of the drill. It's a drill to reprogram the pattern of dropping the hands to the level of the pitch before launching the swing.

Launch the barrel directly from the shoulder to the ball.

Previously, some have expressed concerns about maintaining the hands at the shoulder the way SB demonstrates in this drill, and that it teaches the hitter to limit proper extension. It's not about extension (limiting it or otherwise), but about reprogramming the hitter's understanding of the correct launch location. IMO, for young hitters with strong DBSF tendencies, I think the drill has value.

Gotcha. Thank you. My question was sort of along the lines that somebody with DBSF might have a difficult time doing it at first I would think (haven't tried it with my DD yet) and it would be nice to have some visual feedback to go with the "feel" of "whipping it right now" correctly..especially for the younger ones.

DBSF pattern hitters will likely have a difficult time with this because it's very different from what they are used to doing. Evaluating their performance of the drill based on the result of where their bat lands, however, is the wrong focus. For the purposes of reprogramming DBSF, the focus needs to be on the correct action, not a particular result.

I think you may be surprised. Giving the hands a JOB so to speak may come easier than you think as far as the drill goes. Now getting to the point of performing the action under live throwing conditions will probably be a different story. As Eric has stated above even DBSF players launch the barrel it is just when and where they launch is the problem.

Not here.

I would get the hitter to whip it in the same exact direction you see me doing here.

Then to the opposite field. LF for me.

Then to CF.

Then to the pull side. RF for me.

Do not focus on anything but barrel turn whip at LAUNCH.

This is a drill that will transfer to the swing at the moving ball. Remember its a drill where I am letting go of the bat. NOT EXTENDING MY ARMS or ALLOWING the whipped bat to pull my arms to extension. Its simply a whip the barrel/ turn the barrel at launch drill.

The next phase would then be with the whipped barrel pulling the arms to extension before release of the bat in the whipped direction.

This is phase one.....NO ARM EXTENSION!!!
