Did my DD catcher make the wrong play?

Unless coach has some signal to give them the base she has to throw it. I can't imagine thinking it being a good idea to give up 2nd in a tie game in the 7th.

Forgot to mention, the school ball coach asked her who taught her to throw down before the SS was there. She said her travel ball coach taught her. No sure where the conversation went after that. She was steaming angry all night, and this from a kid who never gets angry on the field.

It shouldn't require a chat with SS, but... My DD is a catcher too and our SS has done that same thing several times. DD pulled her aside and told her that she's going to throw down whenever it's reasonable to do so and to be there, for Pete's sake. Maybe there might be some situations where she wouldn't risk it and they could talk about what those might be (based on the score of the game and maybe on the outfield's ability to back up the ball if it takes a bad bounce).

DD is a catcher and SS - sadly there's no way to clone her so she can just do both.
Hate when DD doesn't have a reliable SS to throw to :/
She's made so many perfect throws that the SS drops or isn't there for.
When she's playing SS, usually the C isn't fast enough.

Funny, my DD is in the same position. Her assistant coach said what DD needs to do is catch the ball, throw it down to 2B, run to 2B to catch her own throw and tag the runner.

Might be a little easier than cloning.

Like others have posted, coach needs to have sign or verbally tell them to let them go.

Our C can throwsides to 2nd, runner better be dang fast and good to get to 3rd.

She will throw it everytime if there is a half way decent chance to get them.

Not here.
By "plenty of time", I would guess that it was a hard pitch cleanly caught, and the throw would be in time to get the runner. We all know that, unless there is an unusually slow runner, there is not much time to assess anything on a steal...it's register that the runner is going, and throw down. The SS should be enroute when the ball is released, but in most situations, the SS isn't going to be standing on the bag when the catcher decides to make that throw.

the shortstop did not move in time the cover the throw, and was not at 2nd when the ball arrived
I would have guess catcher in a tied game, top of the second and SS not being near second base that a catcher wouldn't throw the ball and risk it. I'm guessing the SS never moved so, yeah, maybe the catcher could 'asses' that situation. Might have been a time to 'eat the ball'. As I have heard at games at times.

Mine is a pitcher and SS. Her catcher has said she wishes DD could play SS when she's catching because she's so good about getting there for the throw. it's because tagging girls out is her favorite part of fielding, so she's excited for the throw and always ready.

Maybe she could perfect backpedalling really fast.

I better not tell her about that, she might try it. She loves pitching but she said whenever she's pitching she wishes she could be runners people out (vice versa too, when she's in the field she misses pitching). lol
