sorry this is a bit off topic, but are your girls happy with the feel of the Rip It mask? DD was trying some on yesterday and the feel of it didn't impress DD...but it seemed to be the best vision-wise.

I just got a email with this site and this topic.I coach 2 rec and 2 trav teams and all of my players wear mask. When I say all I mean all from outfield to the pitcher. I will put my 12u team against any team out there and dare for someone to down grade them for wearing a mask because they will get your respect at the end of the game.
The best way to look at this is like this..... There is not a coach out there from rec ball to clg ball that throws batting practice in a cage or on the field that does not get behind a screen or net. So if your players dont wear a mask then you dont throw batting practice behind the net!!!!!!

DD's coach threw BP at the field for our 12U team a couple of weeks ago without a net. However, he did put on an old catcher's mask. :) He said he didn't feel safe out there anymore without some protection.

My 13yo has used a Rip-It since 10u. She doesn't play "in the dirt" without it. When she told us she wanted to pitch, we told her she wore the mask or didn't pitch. She never questioned it. When it turned out she was a pretty good 3rd base, we didn't even have to tell her, she put the mask on. We have discussed coaches who look down on the mask. She said she is so used to it that it would be more uncomfortable to play without it.

So I posted earlier in this thread that my freshman 3b DD wore a face mask and didn't care what other people said. Well DD made varsity and now doesn't want to wear it because the other varsity players don't. Thing is none of the other varsity players play 3b. Any advice? I prefer she wears it, especially since she will be going up against 18 year old seniors.

My DD wore it on Varsity at 3B or pitching. Elsewhere she didn't. She didn't give a hoot what anyone else thought. Nobody said a word. A lot of high school girls don't want to stand out from the crowd for any reason. I can sympathize having been a high school girl eons ago. If your daughter is a good enough player, no one will probably say anything.

This is men's slow pitch and thankfully the 3B walks off the field under his own power but show her this video and ask if she'd like to take the same shot w/o a mask. I'm guessing the 3B in the video had fairly good reflexes and he never was able to get his glove up in time.

Rip It was too heavy for me. I was used to plastic and the Rip It was 8 ounces heavier. Some girls prefer it, though.

thx, will keep that in mind. Anything you recommend?

My oldest started with plastic mask but her vision was severely compromised. Both my girls now use the Rip It (my little one is small) but neither ever complain about weight or being uncomfortable.
