Comparing HRs in HSSB to HSBB.

Never thought about it before, but reading through a recent thread about HRs in FPSB it made me wonder why in Ca the HR rate in FPSB is so much higher than the HR rate in baseball. Personally, I’ve always believed in baseball they should move the fences in until the HR rate is reasonably close...

Comparing AB ending on 1st pitch to all others

Has anyone compared BA when the AB ends on an 0-0 count(1st pitch) as compared to BA where the AB ends on all other counts?

    Called strikes and missed swings

If a hitter has a high percentage of called strikes when s/he bats, does it show anything? How about if the hitter has a low contact percentage when s/he swings?

Hustling in and out and to 1st.

There’s been some recent discussion on a couple of the BB boards about “hustle”. A lot of the talk centered around hustling in and out between innings, but a lot was about busting it 100% to 1st base on all BIPs or other opportunities to legally reach 1st safely. From what little I’ve seen of...

    Oh those rules!

Our team is involved in a curious clash with the rules, and when folks found out about our little “issue”, several parents contacted me and asked me to explain what the heck was going on. I decided to use the team’s newsletter to attempt to explain something that confuses a lot of people. When I...

The value of Runs Created as a statistic.

OK Westwind, here’s your thread. The easiest way I know to explain the value of RC is to show how it relates to other metrics. Here’s a lecture from a Sabermetrics class I took this past spring that explains it using simple graphs to compare it to BA, HR, OBP, SLGP, and OPS from the perspective...

How would these 2 things help the team's cumulative batting avverage?

Assume the team’s cumulative batting average is .350. 1st Question. Assume a new rule goes into effect that says every pitcher has to declare the pitch type and location of the next pitch. What would the team’s BA be a year from now? 2nd question. Assume Devine intervention has taken place...

Does a high percentate of swings and misses mean poor hitting?

I was wondering if I could spot any kind of relation between what rate a batter swings and misses and some other typical hitting metrics, and came up with the attached. The only thing I really saw right off the bat was that the batters who swung and missed at the highest rate were the ones who...

    Kudos to you folks.

I can’t help noting that the general knowledge and manner of presentation of the SB folks I’ve seen here sure seems to be superior to what I generally see on BB boards. I guess what I’m saying is, it seems more “civilized”. Maybe its because so many BB people figger they know everything there is...

How is pitcher "effectiveness" best measured?

There’s a thread on another board about pitching “effectiveness” and what stat shows it best. I said many years ago I thought it was pretty simple and was the relationship between the runs a pitcher gave up and the batters he got out. In essence, ERA. But as time’s gone by, my thoughts have...

Pitches in a normal 7 inning SB game.

I'm just curious. How many pitches is "normal" for a HSSB game. For us and our opponents over the last 8 years, we've been been at 5.7 pitches per out for over 9,300 outs. I don't know why it would be any different for SB as opposed to BB, but I was curious.

How do you know what "type" of hitter a player is?

I’m looking for a way to determine what kind of hitter a players is. For example: are they an aggressive contact hitter who’ll swing at a lot of pitches but makes a lot of contact, or a patient hitter who doesn’t swing at much, but when they swing they drive the ball hard? I know the current...

    HSFPSB data

Been working on a little project for HS baseball, and I thought I’d go ahead and take a look at HSSB as well. The 1st page of the attachment shows all the HS teams I could find in the US and who played more than 5 games. The 2nd page show all team regardlessof the number of games they showed as...

    Game Score for pitchers.

Has anyone ever tried using Bill James’ Game Score metric to look at SB pitchers? If you’re not familiar with it, take a look at the attachment. It’s pretty simple to compute, and its only use is to show dominant performance based on the criteria used. It never was intended as a metric to...

A different way to evaluate pitchers

Been lookin’ for ways to spend the rainy days and found something I used to use many years ago. I decided to update it and see what it looked like. After playing around with it for a while, it started looking as though there might be something worth looking at in it. As always, I’m my own...

    More on ordinary effort

Well, it only too one game this season for me to get into it about scoring something. ;) We were playing our 1st game at a local JUCO field, and was sitting in the pressbox, along with several of the JUCO players who’d been assigned to announce and run the scoreboard. There was also one of their...

    Performance with 2 strikes

On one of the baseball boards, the topic of 2 strike hitting came up. I’ve been in many a discussion about that over the years, and one thing that’s always bothered me, was how anyone managed to identify good 2 strike hitters to begin with. So, this time I decided to bite the bullet and see if I...

Is using velocity a valid way to measure a pitcher's fatigue

While this question doesn’t apply nearly as much to FPSB as it does BB, I’m asking it just to see what kind of responses are made. Do you believe using velocity measured by a radar gun is a legitimate way to measure a pitcher’s fatigue? I know this as a baseball related article, but it is...
