Another HE Confrontation and Interesting Result

Sometimes I'll see pitching coaches suggest a 'hand follow thru', which looks like a he, but isn't taught by making the elbow a point of focus. Sometimes this works by getting the student to accept the suggestion of a hard finger/wrist/hand snap if they haven't previously been able to accomplish...

So an ump says to me

I agree. The level which is appropriate is the strike zone which is defined by the rule set which governs the contest. If the rule set says " armpit to knee", and if an umpire calls that zone, no coach, parent or fan has any ground to stand on if they b$&@h. The ONLY thing an umpire should...

So an ump says to me

Hmmph.... I'm an umpire, and have been a coach, and I honestly cannot imagine the arrogance of an umpire who would do that. His job out there is not to 'test' a pitcher to make her 'better'. If it is, then it's his job to 'test' every athlete out there to make them 'better'. Did he talk to the...

    Umpire accuracy in rec/LL

This is a conversation that needs to be held between Coaches and the governing bodies, ie; NFHS, ASA, USSSA, etc. The NFHS 2015 Rules Book defines the strike zone as " the space over home plate which is between the batter's forward armpit and the top of the knees when the batter assumes a...

Reversed call - D1 ESPN Alabama vs Tenn

If you saw it, what do you think about this? It was a double play throw back to 1st, initially called 'out'...... After discussion, called 'safe'......my opinion was it was a blown call, and corrected to be what it should have been.

    Odd call was it right?

I never touch a discarded bat on the ground because 1) it's not recommended, suggested, or endorsed by any of the organizations I umpire for ASA, NFHS, etc and 2) the liability of deviating from reason 1) is enormous. If coaches want bats out of the way, they can either teach their catchers or...

Umpires-how do you like catchers to set up

Whatever you train your catchers to do, DO NOT have them shift their body to the outside of the plate to provide an outside target if the pitchers are inaccurate. Umpires stay in the slot, and don't appreciate being exposed to inside fastballs out of a catchers' reach. When I see this sitch, I...

    Softball pitching technique article

I have referred to this article for several years. Lots of pitchers pitch differently. I believe if a person can understand what they read, she accurately describes the physiological mechanics of windmill pitching.

    Strike Zone ?

Yes we can disagree. When properly positioned in the 'slot', you are correct, and umpire can see everything. However, when calling from the 'slot', the far front corner of the plate is judged strictly with depth perception, there is no linear reference available. That is why when you see the...

    Strike Zone ?

If he was consistent on outside/inside then that is all you can ask for. Since there were no complaints about high/low, from the description given, it would seem the umpire did a fine job. I disagree with you eddie about the umpire having the best look by being on top of it. The hardest place...

Video Clip-12 Year Old - Feedback wanted

No expert also....but arm action looks good and loose for a 12 yr old. I would focus on using a 'powerline' as she severely steps out and leans. Powerline with some hip drills. Btw- what are you reminding her to do on the 'finish'?

    Both teams get robbed...

I believe all Coaches should Umpire and Fan. All Umpires should Coach and Fan. All Fans should Coach and Umpire. CoachMom, have you ever umpired?

Dealing with team after a horrible day of playing

I do with my HS team what Amy suggested. I ask them in a real nonjudgemental way. They are teen age girls, they love to talk, and more often than not they will tell u exactly what happened.
