    Help With Swing

You're welcome!! Yes, Eric is right. The swings are the same. I know that there are differences in the pitch angle, but we can adjust bat angle and swing plane regardless of where the ball is in the zone. I want my girls to be able to hit a ball regardless of where it is in the zone, that is...

    Help With Swing

Julray, I agree with Eric on all his points. There is a lot of good information out here definitely. There are a couple of classic mistakes that your daughter is making and unfortunately a lot of it may have been taught to her. Here a couple that I notice and address with my hitters from the...

    Throwing from knees vs popping

This a great post and some really good information and opinions. I follow Jen Schroeder closely, she has some really good drills and techniques for catching. I had a chance to talk to one of my cousins who lives in SoCal and attended one of her catching camps. It wasn't the Packaged Deal camp...

    Pitching Mask and College

As a coach I would prefer my corners and my pitcher's wear a mask. In the past I made it mandatory when my girls were younger. Now at 16U I leave it to the discretion of each player and their preference of wearing one or not. I totally disagree with the argument that wearing one has some...

What if a Recruited, Admitted Player CANNOT afford the tuition?

Also, if you go the 529 route you are able to transfer to other family members, or if the monies go unused because the beneficiary received a scholarship you can withdrawal without penalty.

    Another Tag Up Question

This is an appeal play. In my opinion, the umpire should not have made the out call based on her leaving early, and announcing it as he did. The call should have been safe at third, and the onus is then on the defense to appeal the fact that she left second base early.

Are there any coaches who don't claim to be aggressive at base running?

Agree! Would rather be smart than aggressive. I believe coaches have to give players the freedom to make the right decisions on base paths, and make sure that as part of that base running they are taking advantages given them. You will be surprised how a smart base running team leads many...

    Practices during TB Season

We do two days a week, Tuesday and Thursday. We are on the field on Tuesdays and then we hit and pitch in our facility on Thursdays. I don't usually hit outside, unless we absolutely need to work on it. Once we are heavy into our travel ball season I will occasionally give one the weeknights off...

    cut offs at home

Really depends on the skill level of the players. At our age, 16U, we move our pitcher into back up position. First baseman is the cut-off for all balls coming from LC to RF, third baseman is the cut-off for ball down the left field line.

Defending ITB, no outs, only 1 outfield cannon

Depends on the hitter you have up, and what they have done in the game. But I would not hesitate to load the bases. We actually had this scenario three times last summer, and in each we came out with the win. In two of the cases we loaded the bases with no outs and in the other there was one...

    DD Getting Frustrated with Speed

She looks to be throwing faster than 46-47. I have a couple of girls that I do lessons with that are 12U, they are hitting around 50 consistently, one can max out at 53. The biggest problem I've seen my pitchers when they aren't throwing at their top speeds is the lack of legs drive and push...

    Cut or keep?

CoogansBluff, You're right. I feel like I've inspired players that I've coached, I'd like to think so anyway. I am referring more to the players that don't want to make the change or adjustments to play at a higher level. I've had a couple of those, I'am sure we all have.

Sue Enquist "Suck the life out of you."

Preach the 33% Rule to my players constantly. Love it!!

    Cut or keep?

Slappers, You have to do what is best for the team, and if one person, like the player you are describing hinders that in any way, you have to let her go. I've been in a situation that you're in, and as a coach you feel that you can help and maker her better. But you can't coach heart...

    Infield Timming ? Game Ready

Our goal is to get the infield set after our first & second practice. The second practice is to really get them drilled up in their spots to make sure we aren't missing something and our comfortable in our decision. Also, we try to build our team with athletes that can play both infield and...

    I/R in the Classroom

I see it board member, the IR method you mentioned, if you stop it at the 43 second mark, it is there. Regarding the Jenny Finch video.

    I/R in the Classroom

I found some great video from Amanda Scarborough on-line at the power drive site. I like it because it really demonstrates the I/R method in a super slow motion video. She also has one that she did for Team Express, that shows motion, but also demonstrates movement of arm and body for various...

    Bottom of the roster

This is a post that I've shared previously on our local chat board at KC Fastpitch. Hope it is helpful. One thing I will add to what is below, I don't have discussions with parents about playing time. If I get a call about playing time, I let them know we are doing what is best for the team...

Question about fall tryouts and picking the right team...

First and foremost you have to do what is best for your daughter. She will find a team that is a fit, and one that will work out the way your family needs it to. As for your pitching needs, as a coach, I found that it is best for parents to be up front with regard to your expectations for...
