Show what’s ILLEGAL for the love of…I have a girl who does a bit of a crow hop and currently I discourage it and will continue to until the NCAA takes a stance. They’ll have to address it as soon as those girls start showing up en masse. Not the Barnhill style hop…this stuff now is literally a crow hop. My stance isn’t changing…throw underhand, from the circle, inside the 24” lane. Eventually there will be girls leaping 2 feet out of the circle and they’ll move the rubber back again.

Now if only the umpires would watch and learn. Multiple high school umpires at our two pre-season jamborees over the past couple of Saturdays were asked to explain how they will interperet and call the new rule. None could give an answer!
Not the case here! These were informal multi-team settings where numerous umpires were in attentance, rotating in and out of the many short scrimmages to satisfy their annual pre-season practice requirement in our state. Lots of healthy discussion took place among umpires and coaches. It was apparant that our local umpires have so far received little or no guidance on interpretation of this rule. Hopefully the availablity of this video will help the situation.

Because at that point, I don't think there was an answer that could possibly be given. This is all new to the vast majority of us. Like I said, seeing this video doesn't clear it up, but it makes it clear what they want.

I disagree with what they are saying, as I described (poorly) in my previous post. But, this is what they want, so here is what I am watching: a muscular push with the back foot. Come up with whatever cackamamee tips, tricks, and tells you want, I am not watching ears, hands, toes, ponytails, or any of that. (Oh, did I mention I won't be looking very hard for that muscular push?)

Cape Cod Mass.
Since the replant is now legal it will come down to a matter of degree, the girls who are egregious will get called, but then we are back to a subjective call. Although the USA video pitcher looks extreme, if she's legal then anything goes.

Other than getting further off the rubber I'm not certain there is a significant advantage to the replant. The change in the timing of the arm circle will reduce it's contribution to the overall velocity of the pitch. The girl in the USA video has the ball between 8-9 o'clock at front foot plant, the good legal pitchers typically have the ball at about 11 o'clock, this is a big mechanical difference, what will the effect be?

I'm flabbergasted. How can such an organization (NFHS) screw something up so bad?! She's re-planting. The points I want to make have already been stated by various posters but I'll recap (I have to do something with these negative emotions...((my therapist says....))

1. If that's a legal pitch, then NFHS needs to show us what an illegal pitch is.
2. What girl anywhere even leaps like the girl in that video!?
3. Good news is my job as an umpire is now easier (at least for high school ball). Except for some stupid violation with hands or other minor thing, I don't need to worry about illegal pitches anymore.

ETA: My wife who knows hardly anything about pitching was looking over my shoulder at the video and says, "Wow...that's a replant."

People seem to be focusing on
hey you went in the air and landed in a different spot that's a replant.
NO that aint so
>>>it's just Landing in a spot!

The video is communicating that merely Landing and Pitching does not mean it is a replant.

What I noticed is through all these conversations no one can point out in that video that there is a second push that is generating any further forward progress.
* the pitch is thrown from where the spot the pitcher landed.

Other than the pitch finalizing itself
* the video shows that after landing there is no forward progress of the feet/legs.

Rules and the discussion that surrounds them.

Two difficult things for people to overcome~

1. Change
2. Not being in control of the decision making.

Has always been that there are people that would argue about what rule sets there are. How to understand interpret and apply the rule sets. And then want to control the outcome of correcting it. These things will remain consistent no matter what information or guidance is offered to interpret the rules.
This will remain consistent!

At replant of the video being discussed, notice how the pivot foot rolls and turns with a heel lift. This action of the pivot foot is transferring momentum to the frontside and also creating additional forward momentum/force. The stride foot does not have to move more forward to receive that momentum. But, it still is a second push by the pivot foot at replant. Using the stride foot extension to determine a second push seems to be the wrong place to look. The pivot foot rolling and turning up on the toe is a second push by the pivot foot.. The replant and foot action afterwards in this video is quite similar to the back foot of many right handed hitters during a swing. Men pitching today do not jump off the pivot foot at replant. However, most if not all have different degrees of pushing with the pivot foot at replant.
