The nice thing about the Sparkler from a recruiting standpoint is how many schools have coaches in the area for the various tourneys. If you’ve built relationships ahead of time it’s easy to get them to come to your games no matter what fields or pools you’re in.

Literally everything you read, and most of the people you talk to. This is the first paragraph from an article softball America web site.

For one week in July, thousands of softball players arrive in the greater Denver area in hopes of catching the eyes of one of hundreds of college coaches.
Well, there you go! That was my point. Hype. From a softball magazine or from some overzealous too-involved parent whose head is in the clouds. Take note of the parents that talk about "trying to catch a coach's eye" with you. It will be telling.

I don’t disagree with the overzealous parent thing. Are you saying sparkler would have grown into what it is, if no college coaches ever attended.

Agreed and the IDT is the same time so same goes. I also think it can help a recruit narrow their pool because if you’ve been communicating with schools and they can’t manage to make it to one game over the course of this week then it’s a pretty good sign they aren’t interested where as if they come to multiple games then that’s a good sign.

I'm no Nostradamus so I have no idea.

All I know is that the only people doing what you asked about earlier ("Isn't the fact that college coaches from all the big schools attending these events the big selling point") are maybe some magazines and some overzealous, usually inexperienced, parents. That is not the main focus of most of the teams there. Particularly those not in the Power Pools, which constitutes the vast majority of the teams there. They are there to mix a vacation with some softball. They are there for the experience. Which is why any team should be there.

Or as I like to call it, a strike zone the size of a Ritz cracker box. I'm glad we're not going there anymore.
My daughter would like to differ, last year was more like the size of a Ritz cracker. The great thing about CO is when you're watching all these girls putting them over the fence and your team still can't hit them out of the infield there are a ton of travel ball coaches there so you can start the discussion on where your daughter will pitch in the Fall.

TNJ, the week before, saw her team play nine games on fields with 220' fences that were at least 8 feet tall. In that week of games, we hit one out and had none hit against us. In the IDT, we had 19 and gave up 19.
DD played for an org that went to CO every year as one of their bigger tournaments. The last year she went was first year 18u. One of the days we were there that year we played next to a field that had a short porch in left field that backed up to a street. I think it was 170' or so. I was paying some attention to the game on that field because one of the teams playing was full of high level recruits. It was the worst combination possible. Great team versus on alright team, high altitude, and ridiculously short fence. I think i counted 13 homeruns in that game just from that team. The other team had a couple. After the first inning, parents went and stood in the street behind left field to catch homeruns.

The Sparkler has a wide range of teams. Some attend the Colorado tournaments with recruiting as the priority. The draw is the number of college coaches attending primarily the IDT and Louisville tourneys. It’s a vacation too, but showcase teams prioritize recruiting and getting kids to the next level. In addition to the tournaments over the 4th there’s high profile camps such as OnDeck where players are working in front of college coaches.

There’s plenty of teams as you describe there for a vacation. I don’t think there’s a right or wrong. The important thing is being on a team that matches your DD’s goals.

Yes I am aware as I’ve been there 5 times. There are over 1000 teams there. I’d say 10% of them are showcase teams that prioritize recruiting. And that’s probably high. Not to mention the fact that 90% of the players on showcase teams play in college within a 250 mile radius of their home so most showcase players get recruited in local/regional tournaments. The fact remains, recruiting is not the main draw for that tournament.

There is that thing called competition. Bringing together the best teams from around the country to play against each other. The Directors do their best to put like teams vs like teams in the various pools.

We enjoyed the aspect of playing teams from areas that we would not be able to play if staying at home. We already played the Bombers, Tx Glory, Hotshots, Sudden Impacts, Scrap Yard Dawgs, Aces Express, etc in our area 8 times in our local showcases. College coaches also want to see the best play the best. Good warmup tourney before making a run at whatever Nationals the teams chooses to play.
