    Protection after a walk

I was in a conversation with an umpire recently and we were discussing the often debated look back rule when a runner rounds first base after a walk and all of the diffferent scenarios that get misinterpreted. He then told me something that I was completely unaware of. He said that after a...

Umpire's "word play" to interpret obstruction rule.

I agree completely. PERFECT way to handle it! MTR, I certainly did not mean for that reply to sound personal towards you. Having umpired for a few years, I certainly understand and agree with your comments. I apologize if it sounded personal.

Umpire's "word play" to interpret obstruction rule.

Correct on your points from each of you, but the reply posts have really missed the entire point of the thread by adding "possibilities" to the play in question. There are far too many hypothectical situations to play "one size fits all" when discussing softball rules. I recognize and agree...

Umpire's "word play" to interpret obstruction rule.

This did not involve the lookback rule whatsoever. This was simply obstruction. I agree with you to a point. What I mean here is that the runner is not guaranteed to advance a base just because there is obstruction. For example, if the runner had rounded 1st base and the obstruction...

Umpire's "word play" to interpret obstruction rule.

Umpires are obviously an integral part of this great game of softball. The personality of an umpire can make or break the "atmosphere" of a game. I enjoy talking about rules and disecting interesting calls/plays. Here is an example of an umpire that takes umpire's judgement just a little too...

USSSA 10u - Rules on Starting Pitcher being removed and re-entered at pitcher

His ruling would be correct for Little League rules.

    Follow through on a fastball

This is a slightly frustrating point for my 10yo. It's her first year pitching; she is learning from a coach that believes strongly in having a solid mechanical foundation. Her results are not as good as a couple of other girls that are also first-year pitchers that employ the "bowling" style...

Stealing Restrictions on minors (10U) level!!??

tomzpc: Your e-mail was very well written. I think the 3-steal limit is awful. 1-Teach fundamental skills 2-Be patient with girls/teams as they learn 3-Allow them to be challenged: don't make/use rules to restrict challenges 4-PARENTS:focus on the improvement of skills, not on the game results

    Asked to coach

Thanks Amy. Is it a point of emphasis to align the shoulders with the power line even though the hips will only be semi-open? My guess is that you are setting them up here in a "coiled" setup? Hip opening comes later with progression of drills? Also, the backward chaining has to be the only...

I really need parents AND coaches advise badly....new to forum.

Magalee, I can appreciate your frustration. I have a DD that decided she wanted to pitch because she thought it would be "fun." I told her that if she was serious, I would provide lessons. She did not understand how difficult it would be to pitch correctly since all she had seen up to then...

First-ever wounded warrior softball game slide show

Ken, Thank you so much for sharing that slideshow. Those are very powerful images. For all the discussing, teaching, and learning that occurs in this forum, seeing these veterans reminds us that softball is just a very small part in the grand scheme of this life. May God richly bless those...

    Can Runner Run????

Yes. I have seen some overly zealous coaches use this with the younger girls to take advantage of teams that can't throw well. However, IMO this doesn't really teach the girls anything about understanding proper baserunning risks and rewards.

    Asked to coach

Amy, Are you doing this drill to stretch or isolate a specific portion of the delivery? With this setup, their hips are kept from rotating open which will restrict shoulder turn significantly. You know much more than myself, I am just curious about the goal for this setup. Thanks
