3 of my 7th graders told me they aren't coming to travel team practice (starts at 3:30) to rest up for Middle School Open Gym (starts at 5:30)!

Just want thoughts please...
1) skip Open Gym...
2) come for some Travel Ball, then go to Open Gym...
3) skip Travel Ball

what does everyone think??

I am not sure if there is a right or wrong....would you tell the Middle School coach that yoiu have travel ball practice and are not coming to the open gym??

What is open Gym? Do they just go and play pickup basketball or volleyball? And is this a kid decision or a parent decision?

I would not be happy unless this was a required (or somewhat required) school event and there was good reason they needed to be rested for it. Is it a tryout for a middle school team? *Maybe* in that case I would be OK with it.

When my kids were in school open gym was supposedly voluntary. The coach wasn't allowed to coach. But you really HAD to be there. It was hard to figure out, but the " in kids" knew what it meant. What rules do you have in place for missed practices?

Open gym is really for the school ball players.

Now, here in TN, the state rules apply that you can't just hold practice or conditioning for the roster players. "Open Gym" means it's open to any girl in the school to attend. But usually just the ball players attend. ( it's politics )

But it sure is late in the season for an "open gym". ( ???? ) It's usually done during the conditioning times outlined by NFHS.

Yep. I am from Tn as well. My DD school had "open gym" in December and January. Pretty much just school ball players show up and it is pretty informal.

I would have an issue with it then and apply whatever punishment you have for an unexcused absence from practice.

Why not both. They are 7th and 8th graders I assume. They should have boundless energy. If a kid can't handle the demands of an open gym after a practice. How are they going to make it through a tourney weekend?

You read my mind. What 13-year-old has to 'rest up' for playtime?

When I was 13, I was doing everything possible after school to avoid homework.
