I have never heard of that cracking in anyone or felt such a thing.

Maybe impingement up at the top rib. Shoulder joint can also take a beating, especially if the player has an 'over the head' pre-motion. Not good. See the doctor and stop pitching like others have said.

You can ALWAYS see PT directly if you pay for it yourself. Nowadays folks do that because the PT is sports minded and the doctors like to operate on everyone.....
In Michigan you can't see a PT for treatment without a prescription. I thought that was the way it is everywhere but apparently not.

cracking is not the right word exactly, it is more like a crackling or slight popping like what occurs with cracking your knuckles. Athletes can experience this in their joints with movement and its not something to really worry about unless there is pain associated with it

Great news that you got in to PT right away. Isn't it amazing what they can pick up just from watching and listening to you? We live in Iowa and our insurance happens to cover PT even on self referral. I think it is limited to something like 22 visits per individual per year. Around here I think it is partly due to the fact that if you wanted to see an orthopedic doctor it could take 3 months to get in and the general practicitioners are going to refer you anyway.

You might consider getting your daughter into some basic weight training to strengthen all of her muscles. Make sure you find someone who know what they are doing to help her. The PT can probably make some recommendations. Repetitive motions (like with pitching) can cause strength balance issues if you're not working the other side of your body as well. Good luck!

An amazing story, for what it's worth: when my DD made the switch from her old PC to Bill Hillhouse, we went to our first lesson unsure of what to expect. She had always had shoulder pain when pitching and we just thought that was part of being a pitcher. After about 5 pitches, Hillhouse asked her "Does your shoulder bother you?" And she acknowledged it does. He asked "Right here?" pointing to the exact spot where she had pain. She said yes. I was absolutely in disbelief that he saw this in 5 pitches, knew exactly where she hurt, then explained why. We got our homework to fix the problem and she's feeling better than ever.

Gee Whiz, listening to the best instructor around resulted in a happy ending. That is why when I read all of these stories about how this method or that method of pitching is ok if it works I get upset. Hillhouse's version of what a pitching motion should contain in the "absolute" sense is what should be followed. If there are those of you out there that dispute his "absolutes" then you have no clue as to what softball pitching entails.

My dd has what is called shoulder instability and we are currently going on 6 mos of PT to strengthen the shoulder muscles and CORE muscles. Has anybody had a dd with this injury? and how long did it take to heal? during this time we have shut every sport down (basketball, tennis, softball, pitching) Hoping she will be ready for the up coming season!!! DD is a pitcher for tb team and injury occured during pitching practice. My advice would be to shut your DD down or it will lead into a more serious injury. :(

My DD has the shoulder instability in her non dominant arm. She only pitches for her HS team and it was after her frosh season she complained of the pain. She's in PT to strengthen the muscles supporting the shoulder joint. The Ortho and PT say this can take months. The good news for her is that since it's her non dominant arm, she's okay for sports, except pitching and tumbling. The Ortho said that sometimes it's caused by trauma (not my daughter's case, she's already had an MRI and there is no tear), sometimes it's a child's growth pattern, and sometimes it's hereditary. He says PT can take months, but some kids never respond to it and those are the non-tear cases that he has to go in and fix.

Thanks Jinjet95. That is the same information I am getting from our Ortho. My dd has had the MRI and she has no tears. Praying that PT will be enough for her.(Don't like the thoughts of surgery) She is starting to feel like she is gonna loose everything she learned about pitching and has so much work ahead of her to get back!

A side affect of telling kids they have to pitch year round to keep their skills sharp. They will try to practice and play through medical conditions that should put them on the bench. After all, the coach and maybe the parents have been telling her that to sit for a month or two will ruin her pitching ability and possibly end her chances of being that ace pitcher. And everyone knows only the aces get to play on the college teams.

In my dd case PC and TB coach tell her take the time to heal and pitching is like riding a bike and it will come back to her. DD is a hard worker and is not use to so much down time (from sports). She is learning that through all this PT, she is going to be a much better and stronger athlete with alot more knowledge how to maintain being a healthy athlete. In our case, we are making lemonade out of the lemons. :)
