Self toss hitting?

  • Yes, we cycle it in.

  • Crap, kinda forgot about it.

  • Nope, haven't even thought to use it.

Just shot this video from yesterday, when we were in the tunnel. "She likes to review what she's focusing on during certain drills"

We started the tunnel yesterday with tee, doing 10 to contact, 15 extensions, then full swings while moving the tee around multiple spots for a couple buckets. Then went to this self toss for a bucket, then to front toss for the rest of the time. I do check blast info off and on for plane and attack angles while we are there, but mostly just track front toss or against live pitching sessions with blast.

I think it's beneficial. The kids are always in awe that we coaches can do it, because it's brutal when they try it themselves. I may have my kid start doing it. She was getting better last time we fooled with it. She needs some reaction work for sure.

The real question is, do you toss with your dominant hand, or your non dominant?? I'd like to see that poll as well.

If you're doing it right -- and in a way that can actually help you as a hitter -- you should use your bottom hand. I don't think hand dominance matters (I'm right handed. I usually hit infield righty, but I mostly bat lefty whenever I play softball/baseball).

If you do it this way, you can start pre-loaded. You don't really have time to load when tossing it to yourself in any meaningful way. For a lot of hitters who struggle to understand timing and load, pre-loading, tossing out in front (and not needing to do weird stuff with your hands to get them in position), and swinging can help.

I think bottom-hand tossers tend to exhibit more control, too, which is better for actually hitting infield/outfield.

I'm with you on this, I just don't see it as having any value other than possibly a general hand/eye coordination drill. Posture, grip, load and many other elements of the swing can be overlooked. Maybe it has some potential as a top/one hand drill, I will look into that
Here is a bottom hand version

If I was going to toss with my top hand this is the only way I would think of doing it. I actually hit my DS GB this way (well not open like that but..) the other day as I tore my bicep on my top hand arm...lol. I cannot use it to swing but flipping it up I can handle..

If you walk into the hit you can but yeah just standing there it is not easy (especially for a 12 YO). I've always tossed with my bottom hand.

I'm supposed to get them to walk AND toss a ball AND swing and actually hit it at the same time?

Might be worth a try for the comedy.

My 8 YO son can do it hitting both hands (but he tosses with the bottom hand 😉)

Self toss is destructive, just like every other drill.

It teaches you to swing without striding. IOW, it reinforces opening up.

Why do we insist on using drills that do not IMPROVE our swing?
