I'm a simple guy. Fastball = Fastest pitch you have; which is generally the straightest pitch you have . Then variations on that pitch which induce spin/motion, will also reduce velocity to the core pitch.
Correct. Fast pitch, faster to the plate, with less time for movementI'm a simple guy. Fastball = Fastest pitch you have; which is generally the straightest pitch you have . Then variations on that pitch which induce spin/motion, will also reduce velocity to the core pitch.
So your sayingEvery pitcher should have 3 fastballs. Maddux as mentioned before was a fastball and change up master who very rarely threw a breaking pitch
Sinker, fastball, cut, change up. A tiny bag of tricks but they all sent him to the hall
However not necessarily.Correct. Fast pitch, faster to the plate, with less time for movement
My wife should take cues from you with regards to how to get me to stop arguing..that almost worked .Thanku for discussion towards this!
Think i was fairly clear in post #13 describing the communication conundrum.Sinker, 2 seamers, splitter, etc you are not trying to impart spin via wrist/hand articulation, to make it move. For the most part you change your grip and throw it like a 4 seamer. The word fastball could easily mean, in baseball at least, a pitch where you do not try to spin it..but fastball is shorter to say...
What are you trying to get at here? You want a verbage revolution or something?
Do the coach and player speak a different language and they cannot afford an interpreter (but you understand both languages of course ) ?Think i was fairly clear in post #13 describing the communication conundrum.
Simply that i know it can cause confusion.
For instance
Catching a new pitcher
Coach says
Heres her fastball...
And it SHARPLY drops.
I say to pitcher
Theres some nice break on that
She says
Its my drop.
Coach thinks its a fastball cuz its her fastest pitch.
The other team see's pitcher throwing this and says
Watch out for her drop!
Why do they say that?
Cuz it breaks sharply down.
Coached called it a fastball,eg she imparts dropball spin on a pitch coach thinks is her fastball? Sounds like an education problem and not a verbage issue.
So your saying
His fastballs actually were
1. Straight faster pitch
2. Sinker
3. Cutter
Thats the point of this post
About the word 'fastball'
is not always describing the actual trajectory of the pitch, not what its doing.
Cuzzzzz just like in that post
Says he has 3 fastballs.....
And then....
Had to describe what they really do/are.
If a batter asked the previous batter,
What did he throw you?
And the answer was
All fastballs,
Is not the same as
He threw
1. Fastball
2. Cutters
3. Sinkers
These words provide description of alternate moving/breaking pitches.
