That number is no good either because the reported cases are presumably in quarantine. The ones to worry about are asymptomatic unreported cases or even symptomatic unreported cases.
I sort of mentioned that originally...hey I didn't say it was a perfect analysis( I said back of the envelope..) ....tough crowd  Unreported cases would likely be higher than reported cases one would think so the estimate is conservative more than likely.

Yeah let's simplify things and say it's one big guess as to how large or small your chances are of getting it at a softball tournament. Lol..... Way too many variables involved.

And honestly it's not so much about catching it, it's what happens if you do catch it. Because I have a feeling most of us are going to catch it one way or the other before a vaccine is discovered.

Right I agree with this but we do know that certain groups are more likely to get very sick so those people should stay away from gatherings with a high probability (based upon location and size of gatherings) where there is a high probability of being in contact with someone who is infected. If you are in Montana that means something different at the moment then if you are in NYC. The "large" in the stay away from large groups recommendations would differ for these two locations.

It is also about who you come in contact with on a daily basis..if you live with your 80 YO parent you should probably act as if you are a high risk individual...

We’re all shooting in the dark, but everything I’ve read makes me think that the virus is a lot more prevalent than the reported numbers, and that repeated exposure in contained indoor spaces such as prisons, nursing homes, mass transit, factories, warehouses and ships presents the greatest risk of infection. It seems that Sweden has had many of its casualties in nursing homes but the primary schools have had few incidents. Taking into account all we know so far, and accepting that this virus will be with us for a long period going forward, I am comfortable with my family attending softball tournaments and my DD going to school in the fall (8th grade).

The luxury of choice.... The Ohio nanny state has declared all organized athletics continue to be verboten. (Through the end of May at least) Not sure what the rest of the US looks like.
  • Spectator sports, recreational sports tournaments and organized recreational sports leagues.

Correct. Also scientists have found that the virus dies quickly whenexposed to heat and sunlight and humidity. Which while difficult to assume, weather forcasters are already expecting a overly hot month of may into summer.

I think the chances of getting infected during the games is low... it's the restrooms... it's the crowding under team tents between games... the concession stand... these are going to be the risky areas...

IDK, maybe all of the other parents will suddenly bring their own tents, instead of camping out under mine?

Or if they want to limit the chance that things get shutdown again and then no more softball again, maybe they will just drop their kids off (assuming we are not talking about t-ball or 8U) or at least limit it to 1 family member per kid. If you are parent why not take every precaution to make sure kids get to keep playing, even if you attending only changes things by a miniscule amount? The games are supposed to be about the kids..parents are optional..

I am sure my kid isn't the only one who has worked her butt off since games ended last Fall (early November for her). The least we can do as parents is to do everything we can to allow them to keep playing once you have deemed it safe to do so...Because whether you agree with it or not, things will get shutdown again if cases start to spike..

Agreed. But every week you postpone getting infected, the Medical System is getting better treating it...

As an exercise, lets just say we find out before a second wave hits that the hospitalization and mortality rates for TB age girls is similar to the flu. If you only take a self-centered view of things (not saying you should..just an exercise remember ;)) , or your situation is such that you and your family rarely if ever come in contact with high risk individuals, would that change your view on when it is reasonable to go back playing?

Well, as an exercise, I'd rather see tourneys be nixed. Keep play local, double-headers. Play two, leave.
