Do you find wearing black jerseys makes a difference in summer?

Go sleeveless in the summer. That helps a lot more than color choice.

I'm curious about the color in relation to heat. What's the actual science. I feel some of it is just centuries-old wives tale.

the science is the lighter the color of something, the more light waves are reflected off of it rather than absorbed. that is why DDs catching helmet and chest protector are white primarily.

that being said, fabric and cut can make a huge difference as well. if I had my way, DDs team would wear orange or gray as primary colors (navy is their other color) in hot weather. but it appears they will have navy jersye with orange pants, and orange jersey with navy pants.

But most chest protectors are black inside ... so by those articles, the chest protectors should be pulling heat away. ;)

not really, difference in color is due to reflection/absorbtion of light waves. as for the heat from an umps or players body being transmitted to clothing/gear, that is not light wave transference, more heat transfer through contact of two bodies at different temps. color not really an issue for that (although fabric, etc. certainly is).

think of removing snow/ice from cars and surfaces. doesnt it all start to melt much more quickly once you get some of the surface exposed because snow/ice reflect the radiation, while the car body/glass or driveway absorbs the light waves and therefore rise in temperature faster (which then transferes to remaining snow and ice via physical contact with ice and snow).

I mean the actual science in exactly how many degrees. Like I said, I'll wear the sleeveless black jersey in July. You can wear the white, wool sweater. ;)

I think the white/black thing is not nearly as extreme as people make it out to be. We've all been to tournaments in the middle of summer heat -- every player is miserable.

We used to have a black jersey that was made by Russell that was great. It was however a little heavy so we went out and got a red mesh jersey and if we would bring both jerseys to a tournament and if we had an early game we would wear the black one and if it got warmer in the afternoon we would switch to the red mesh. We were playing in Michigan and it's pretty cold for the majority of the season.

Black absorbs light faster than white and converts it to heat. That's why black isn't a good color to wear in the summer. The geek in me wants to go more in details about it, but I will just put everyone here to sleep.

Yes, I know that. That's been common knowledge for centuries.

However, people tend to way over-blow the extent of it.

Yes!

There's nothing magical about the color white that makes every white jersey cooler than every black one.

A few years ago DD's team was playing in 116 degrees in their sleeveless, thin, breathable black jerseys with no problem, while several of her opponents in thick, white, sleeved jerseys had to leave the game with obvious signs of heat exhaustion. White did nothing to help those girls because those jerseys were just not made for playing in the heat, no matter what color they were.

I haven't read the articles - but are they saying if you have identical black and white jerseys, the white won't keep the player cooler?

I like to wear colors that blend in with OF fences so people cannot detect my hand gestures when DD's coach starts bunting runners over down by 8 runs.
