Wait, what?
This might be one of those semantics issues in a hitting thread, but I'm way confused by this.
What do you mean by the hands "fire" first? And what do you mean by the hip extending? In those Griffey GIFs, the rear leg turns the hip first. The hands are still back (his barely even move, just a little up/back). You can see a massive amount of stretch in his jersey.
Or maybe you know all this and I just completely misunderstood what you're trying to say. That happens to me a lot in the hitting threads. I feel like almost everybody describes the same thing differently, which leads to disagreements that aren't really disagreements.
The hands are the trigger........
The proper word is “Extension” I used extended.
In the Griffey gifs the rear leg is forcing the pelvic girdle open towards the pitcher.... He isn’t firing his hips...... where are the hands when you see the pin stripe on his pants appear? That is the hip reaching Extension. He has already applied force to the handle of the bat when the hip started towards Extension. The hands are the trigger.
Take my daughter for example. She was taught hips before hands “fire those hips”. The picture below shows her hip in a state of flexion.
The blow clip shows her hip in Extension.
She never started to swing the bat yet but she already lost her load. That is what a conscience effort of firing the hips will get you. An out of sequence swing. The hands are the trigger for the hips, a reaction to support the role of the hands. That is what is meant when I write “gets fired”.
Mobility will play a role so each hitter will be different but should start after the hands tell it to.
Dig up some old clips of Lexie Elkins or any power hitter from UL when Lotief was there. Take a look at the way they did their takes on pitches.... That would firing the hip.
