I was my intent to address the actual subject, not advance an agenda. :) The bottom line is that many players go without a mask and injuries are extremely rare. If the coaches were in anyway concerned they would required their players to wear them. The players are grown women capable of thinking for themselves.

The real subject at hand is the claim that a hitter can't hit as well with a cage as without. After hitting with one for 10+ years.

Don't know about anyone else but I find it hard to believe that literally thousands of players who actually step into the box to hit are wrong, and those that only hit a keyboard have it right. :)

Do you truly believe that a cage affects a hitter's performance? Do fielding masks also affect pitchers' performance?

I think the answer to the question "Why do players stop using cages/masks when they get to college and don't have to wear them?" is not so straightforward. While performance may be the most common answer, I believe it's more complicated - psychological, peer pressure, real or perceived coach biases/preferences, rebellion versus authority, or simply because they can etc probably all come into play, much the same as to why some college kids begin smoking, drinking, having sex etc...

FWIW - I'm in the not mandated, pro-choice camp for college but do recall at least 3 occasions when I saw my DD take a pitched ball to the cage that probably would've resulted in injury and/or missed time had she only been wearing a cage-less helmet. Being used to a catcher's helmet, she never felt limited by a cage and chose to hit with one in college.

They are grown adults. Not up to us to question their decisions. When we step into the box we can decide for ourselves.

These things are decided for us everyday. Seat belts are mandatory. Some things should be made mandatory. Everyone has the same equipment then it's a level field with less risk. Take it out of their hands make it safer.

Do you think if given the option most batters would choose to not wear ANY batting helmet at all? Those plastic helmets obscure the vision a little, are heavy vs no helmet, annoying ear guard, and generally don't fit the head 100% perfect. I'm sure someone could argue that the batting helmet without a cage degrades a players perfomance and should be optional as any adult should be able to make their decision on whether or not they should use one.

By the way, in MLB all batters must wear the above mentioned safety equipment (batting helmet).

I think it is naive to think that it does not affect performance. To what degree is unknown.

Anyone know how Demi Turner is doing?...
No updates?

I've been checking social media daily, and nothing. Several people have tweeted directly to @UACoachMurphy and @AlabamaSB asking for an update and their has been no reply. They may require Demi's permission before releasing an update, I'm not sure.

This was last posted on April 2nd:

UPDATE: Demi Turner suffered a facial injury during yesterday's game. She is out of the hospital but will not join the team for today's game

Absolutely would need Demi's written permission to make a statement. This is a core constraint of HIPPA. This subject is covered regularly in team meetings regarding compliance. Unfortunately I suspect that no news is not at all good.

I'm not sure HIPPA rules would be in place for Patrick Murphy in this case, as they pertain mainly to healthcare providers... I'm sure UA and the coach are just respecting the privacy of the individual, but I dont think it has anything to do with HIPPA.
