My DD and I were watching this game when it happened. Scary, particularly since she is also a pitcher. (10U at the time). She took 2 line drives last year. One while scrimmaging our 12u team against a hitter that could hit it out of our high school field. Fortunately she got a piece of it with her glove and it glanced off her ribs. The other was in a tournament when she was asked to play up at 12u. Luckily just took it square on the shin. Both times finished out the games after a few minutes to recover. She always wears a mask while in the infield. Glad to see Finucane is wearing one now. Hopefully Lowery and all others follow suit. Sad to see it has to come this before they decide to do so.

$35 seems like a very small price to pay to keep a collegiate team's ace from missing circle time

But if you listen to some posters here, they will blame the pitcher for not hitting her spots or not good enough to not have to wear a mask. Give me a friggin break. Getting hit in the face can happen to ANY pitcher no matter how good they are.

I’ve only seen posts that it’s not inevitable they’ll be maimed if they don’t wear a mask. I’ve never seen anyone here blame a pitcher for getting hit.

Here's a recent post by one DFP "Kids need to learn to play defense, not leave it fat and if they want they can wear a mask"

I think this kind of statement places the blame on the pitcher for getting hit in the face for either not playing good defense and/or not pitching well enough. I think its a very misguided position to take...

So kids don't need to learn to play defense or leave it fat? I don't see anything about kids shouldn't wear masks. It's good advice whether they have a mask on or not.

My point is and always has been that a mask is no substitute for failing to elevate ones skills. I ask who is at more risk, the pitcher that throws it fat and down the middle or the one that has great command and works the edges of the plate? The word AND is inclusive. Now had I said OR as shown below you could possibly make a case that my position is misguided.

"Kids need to learn to play defense, not leave it fat OR if they want they can wear a mask"

Again, using the ever popular seat belt analogy, a mask like a seat belt is no substitute for requisite skills.

Now that the mask stigma appears to gone the way of the dinosaur with even some of those at the highest level wearing masks, I have to wonder what will come next. :)
