when I first started catching at 7 or 8 years old, I wore a batting helmet backwards (and tilted slightly so I could see) and a mask whose straps stretched across the helmet. I wore that for the entire season.

Many MLB catchers still wear backwards batting helmets (with no ear covers) with seperate masks.

No, they don't. They wear special-made catcher's helmets with separate masks. They are not batting helmets, even though they look like one.

Wilson Adult Old School Catcher's Skull Cap | DICK'S Sporting Goods

uh.....I wore one as a teenage catcher. They call it a skull cap but it is made exactly like a batting helmet without ear flaps. There is nothing special-made about it. The shell and the padding are the same. A true skull cap does not have a brim. Now some base coaches wear these "skull caps". Some catchers wear these "skull caps" with the brim forward.
