Over the many recent years i remember a Chattanooga TN tourney as being a really strong competition tourney (at least at the 16u level)

Best showcase - Louisville Slugger Independence Day Tournament in Boulder, CO.

Best nationals - PGF. ASA a DISTANT second, but still pretty darn good.

I was expecting this before I played-back the semi's and finals from Georgia where the cheating pitcher from EC Bullets won it all but honestly I did NOT see a higher level of play. That was 18U though. Maybe at the younger ages it is more like you are saying.
