Face Masks

I honestly can't believe softball is the only sport to not require "proper safety equipment" including face masks - think football, lacrosse, etc.

Yes - we've all heard college coaches look at face masks as a "confidence" issue. Every year we also hear of several college players getting teeth knocked loose, broken noses and concussions. Speaking of "confidence" and "concussions", Bianca Mejia, who plays PROFESSIONALLY at SS, always wears a mask since she took one to the face and suffered facial injuries and a concussion. Bianca realizes another hit like that & chances are she'll have permanent brain damage like many multiple-concussion NFL players.

Unfortunately, it will probably take a traumatic injury and a huge lawsuit for things to change. Once a University pays out a few million, the University's administration will require face masks, and other Universities will want to mitigate their risk.

Wouldn't it be nice if a prominent college coach or the ASA would take the lead & require masks so it becomes "cool" for everyone while keeping our daughters safe?

I also believe in world peace and ending hunger :)!

Personally, I believe evaluating the benefits of wearing a mask based upon the likelihood of taking a LD to the face is a bit like deciding to wear a seat belt based upon how many head-on collisions I've been in. It's a stupid way of making the decision. I've never been in a head-on collision, but that doesn't mean I don't need to buckle up every time I get in a vehicle.

I hope this very sad story makes us all think again. This boy was killed playing baseball this week. Hit by a line drive? Nope. Hit by a ball while playing catch.

I can assure you, parents whose DDs don't wear masks are not "stupid", "nuts" or "just don't get it."

Totally agree. It is still - AND SHOULD ALWAYS BE - a personal choice.

DD wears a mask because she chooses to, having seen the results of a line drive to the face. And Mom and I are just fine with her decision. If she decides at some point to forego the mask, she'll be over 18 - we'll be nervous - but it's still her choice.

The same arguments were made against seat belts and helmets for motorcyclists. And I'm sure the same argument was made against batting helmets.

For now it is a personal choice but I'd be surprised if it always is.

Glad to hear she is back... SlingNUT has no idea what you had to go through, but I can guarantee if he did he wouldn't be spewing his nonsense. I have seen my share of head injuries and it is hard to understand those that don't see.

Oh yeah "coach" kevin, the story you are refering to occured in basketball game. It is very tragic and wouldn't wish it on anyone. But what does it have to do with wearing a mask???? Are you now saying basketball players should wear helmets?? I ask you what positions should wear them, you don't answer. I asked what about the other hazards at the ball fields, you don't answer. What if this was a discussion that dictated what you fed your kids, what shows they can watch, what games they can play,... Would jump on ship and say OK?? I'm sure your kids, like most, eat more than enough high fructose corn syrup, chips, hamburgers, and such. But since the effects aren't instant you have no problem with them shoving down another hotdog. This is not the "should or shouldn't wear one" debate you are making it out to be. I have said from the get go if you want your kid to wear one, then have them wear it. But it should be the choice of the family, not YOU or anyone else dictating the decision. And for your information genius my family has been thru it so my experience outways your spewing of know it all sideline crap. So get back to coaching your league that doesn't keep score, don't want to hurt any feelings. I'm sure your house is full of participation trophies.

Finch sums it up very well.

Hey kev, this could happen to ANYONE at any given time at the ball fields. In this case it appears he was hit in the neck. What do you suggest we do to prevent it from happening again???

Slingnut, I didn't answer you because it's a round robin argument. It's not a rule, so therefore you can choose what you want. You should actually would go back and re-read what I have been writing, I said IF mandatory masks became a rule then the girls would get used to it just as they did when they made masks for the helmets mandatory... And that there has to be a fatality BEFORE they make it a rule, and that is sad.

Yes things happen all the times on the field and you cannot protect from every injury. But just as some have mentioned, mandatory seatbelt laws and helmet laws came into effect for our own protection.

Now IMO, yes I think it should be mandatory for pitchers.... Happy now?

OOOOHHHHH mr big time been through it before huh? I don't believe you in the slightest, because if you have been through traumatic brain injuries you would be on the bubblewrap side. Now go back to your gator hunting TV show.
