DD's 8U District finals game. Fly ball to shallow right-center, our outfielder runs forward to make the catch. The ball bounces off the heel of her glove, and rattles around a little before she pins it against her body. She gains control, and throws to 2B to catch the runner off the base for the double play.

From the opposing first base coach...

"Hey, Blue! No catch. She has to catch it with her glove!!"

....with both feet in bounds, too, I'm sure. And that was a coach?!? SMH

Ugh... At a 12u game the other day, my batter hits a line drive down the 1B line. F3 reaches out with her glove into foul territory and almost makes a great catch. The ball was in foul territory when it was touched and the umpire calls foul ball. One of our parents starts giving the umpire grief because "her feet were inbounds." Between innings he was still grousing about it and I had to tell him that this wasn't football. This was a guy I was an AC for for a few seasons. Just goes to show you...

This past weekend we had a girl lay down a bunt in front of the plate and roll into the very top corner of the batter's box. Our girl ran to first, opposing catcher did nothing. Coach came to PU saying "Blue, that was in the batter's box." PU answered "Yes, sir, it was." Coach next said, "But you didn't call it a foul ball! You let her to go first!" PU then explained the field set up, front part of box is fair territory, home plate is in fair territory, etc. Coach did NOT understand and was still grumbling (along with several of their team parents) about how the ump let the batter go to first on a foul ball!

That's too funny. Both that an 8U can make a running catch and have presense of mind to double the girl off after pinning ball to her body and the coach not usderstanding what a catch is.

But any excuse to post this old video of a catch w/o the glove is a good one

I can only assume his comment was born from the frustration of our defense shutting his team down in a critical game, and he was grasping at anything that came to his head. Either that, or he was a complete moron. Maybe some of both.

We spent some significant practice time working on doubling off runners on fly balls. The work has paid off. We've turned 3 DPs on fly balls, and had two others that were very close. Our defense has been awesome. In our 23 tournament games to date, only twice have we allowed more than 3 runs, and one of those we won.
