It varies by school and circle of friends. Have you expressed your $ concern and, if so, was it before she replied?
I like the idea of them contributing $/time towards it - a great indicator of how much they want it.

I was surprised when Jake came home during Christmas with one. Very nice. Then again the loot she gets throughout the year is incredible. 
DD's childhood friend is a pitcher at Illinois this year. She got lots of swag from the school but no letter jacket. Very nice parka for winter.
They are a BIG deal here. DD goes to private Catholic school where they have to wear navy blue blazers. If you have a varsity jacket, you can wear it instead of the blazer, so they all do!

Dd wears one and most of the schools locally do. But I live in NW Pa..
DD got hers as a freshman. She wears it when weather allows. They are more popular with the boys than the girls at her school. She has more patches than when photo was taken. Soon it will just be expensive memorabilia. I wish we had taken the photo from other side so her softball patches were more prominent than her track patches.
