15-Year-Old Dies After Being Hit by Baseball in Minnesota
BEMIDJI, Minn. — May 25, 2015, 6:53 PM ET
Associated Press
Police say a 15-year-old baseball player has died after being struck by a ball in the northern Minnesota city of Bemidji.

The president of the Bemidji Youth Baseball League, Bruce Dahlin, tells KSTP-TV ( Twins to Honor Boy Who Died Playing Baseball | KSTP TV - Minneapolis and St. Paul ) that Zacharie Schaubhut lived in Des Moines, Iowa, but was living with his grandparents for the summer so he could play baseball in Bemidji.

Police say the incident happened just before 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the Bemidji High School baseball field.

Police say Zacharie was pitching and was struck by a ball that a batter hit. He died later at a hospital.

It's so sad, seems like I hear/read more about softball/baseball fatalities in youth sports then any other sport.

Yes it is. Like the young lady from California do not be surprised if when it is all said and done the COD had nothing to do with sports.

In the linked article the doctor says he showed no sign of being hit and it might have been a medical condition. Either way, tragic loss for the family and community.

So sad! My prayers go out to his family.
I was watching my grandson (11 yr old) play in a tournament over the weekend and the opposing teams pitcher had a ball hit straight back at his head. He covered up just in time and the ball hit his wrist and fractured it. Could have been real bad.

This is a terrible tragedy. If he was struck in the chest with a batted ball, the cause could be commotio cordis, which is a fatal irregular rhythm that results from a blow to the chest at a specific instance in the heart's electrical cycle. There are about 2 or 3 cases per year reported in youth baseball, but it has also been known to occur to lacrosse goalies and catchers who are wearing chest protectors. This is the reason why I don't think the HeartGards actually work, and there is no data in humans to demonstrate they are effective.

It seems like the original headline has been changed, to say that he died during a baseball game. The other kids would apparently know, if he had been struck or not.

My son broke his jaw, in 5th grade. He was pitching in a sandlot game. He got lucky that it didn't get him in the throat.
