Sluggo - Thank You

Inside this line of questioning lies my whole heartburn with the "HE equals BAD" topic.
I always equated the IR forum gurus as saying any pitch/pitcher that ends HE has done something incredibly wrong.
Thanks for clearing this up for me.
I think HE should be officially renamed as it is very misleading.
HE should be called something like “NAW – No Arm Whip” or “ENB – Elbow Never Breaks” or……

Wow........This kid does NOT push the ball by any means.......She is using I/R......She is palm up at 9:00.......Just because she finishes "up" vs. through, does not mean she isn't using I/R.......

She is also 6 Feet tall which never hurts the velocity equation........Hell, her head would only miss the 6ft. 8inch door frame behind her by 8".......

At at 6:50, when she does turn "full through I/R", there is a OBVIOUS increase in velocity and pop. If I was her pitching coach, THAT would be her fastball both IN AND OUT.......

Ironically if you watch starting at 6:40, she is performing the same pitch using an "up" finish.......She realizes that the up finish is hurting her mechanics, and then starts turning full over, at which point EVERY PITCH gets faster and with better location.....

The kid got a 2 year ride to Upstate N.C.

There is a pattern I've noticed, and I'll mention here. It seems that many people want to make a point use the "up finish" to down-play the importance of I/R in the pitching motion......It's almost like they do it in purpose to substantiate their position, when they actually do know the difference between a H/E push and an I/R whip.......

Kind of dis-heartening IMO.........

Maybe it is all a matter of definition.

I'm having difficulty in putting IR with "the whip" and then claiming 80% of the throwing motion is IR. Kind of like saying, "Me and Tiger Woods combined to make $9,000,00 last year."

Here is Anna Miller from Upstate South Carolina (pitching starts around 1 min):

Clearly, she is using an HE. However, her whip is good and she has good lower body mechanics. She hasn't lost 80% of her pitching power because she is using HE.

BUT (and there is always a but) when she starts trying to throw an IR drop curve (around 6:55), it seems she has more pop on the ball than she does with her fastball.

Apparently we need to come up with a new name for what we've been calling the "HE" style of pitching.

Would it be the push-the-ball style vs. pull-the-ball style??? Thoughts?

How about a change up?

My favorite line that I hear is "Wow...your daughter throws the ball hard....but work on her finishing (textbook HE finish demonstrated) and she'll be unhittable" I just thank them and tell them "We'll work on it"

Too bad, "You don't know what you're talking about!" is rude. I guess we'll have to accept giving them a smile.

Having taken my DD to work with Anna Miller a few weeks ago, I can attest that she does not teach the bowling motion (HE). We had a great time with her and although I don't agree with everything she taught, DD loved every minute and was inspired to work harder because of their interaction. Having thrown 2 no-hitters back-to-back in the last few days has fired her up even more.

Keep in mind, this video comes from when she was at College of the Siskiyous--prior to her work with Rick Pauly.
