12U Rec game played under ASA rules. Base runners at 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. Passed ball but the backstop is short so neither runner advances but have longer leadoffs. Catcher throws to pitcher who is inside the circle, pitcher almost immediately turns and throws to third to try to get runner. Bad throw gets away and runner on third advances to score, runner on second returns to second where she is called out for a look back violation because she didn't return to base when pitcher had ball in circle prior to making throw to third.

What is the correct interpretation of the rule? I was of the understanding that if the pitcher made a play on a runner that the look back was not in effect until she controlled the ball in the circle again. The umpire insisted that she was in violation because she didn't go back immediately prior to the throw from the pitcher to third (which happened bang/bang as she received the ball).

Thanks

If he was calling her out on a LBR violation, the ball is dead and everyone else moves back to the last base touched at the time of the violation. Whatever happens after that is moot. If he is allowing that the pitcher made a play and the runner advanced and scored, there is no way he can have a LBR violation on the other runner at the same time.

If the pitcher is making a play the look back rule is off for all runners. Based on your description of the immediate throw to 3rd after receiving the ball the look back rule would have never taken effect. And, if the umpire was going to rule a look back violation, the ball would have been dead and all other runners returned to last base touched. Runner from 3rd would not have scored.
