Pitching is the most important part of fast-pitch softball. The pitcher's mound is 46 feet from home plate and the pitcher must follow the official softball rules in order to pitch legally and effectively.
Legal delivery
In order to make a legal pitch, the pitcher must start out with both feet on the pitcher's plate -- known as the mound -- and then can start her motion to deliver the ball. She may take one step before going forward. She must then go forward and deliver the ball in one straightforward motion and stay in the pitcher's circle when the pitch is finished.
