Last night Runners on second and third. Batter bunts. Third base fakes throw to first and both runners advance. Runner is 1/2 way to home and runner on second is now standing on third base. Fielder runs runner back to third and tags her standing on the base, while the runner that was on third starts to run back to second and she runs her down and tags her. Umpire calls runner going back to second as the only out. Correct call?

It's the right call in this situation.

Two runners can't legally occupy the same base. If they do, one of them is liable to be tagged out, even if she's touching the base.

Where it gets a little trickier is in determining which runner can be tagged out. It changes depending on if the lead runner is forced to advance (as per the definition of a forced runner on a force play) or not.

On this play, the lead runner is not forced to advance. So, if both of those runners are touching third it would be the trailing runner who can be tagged out.

Switch it around a little and assume that the bases had been loaded on this play. Now, when the batter becomes a batter-runner, the runner on third is forced to advance. If both she and the trailing runner from second were standing on third, it would be the lead runner who could be tagged out.
