Tryout Question

DD's travel ball team is having tryouts next month. Is it typical for current players to try out again as well or do they usually just hold tryouts to fill empty spots on the team?

I'm new to all this!

Both. Competitive teams hold tryouts where all spots are open. Friendly teams want to fill spots and just play ball and have fun traditionally.

Everyone tries out for my DD's org. Between you, me and the lamp post, I am fairly certain that the top teams at each level already have at least 10 out of the 12 roster spots set in stone.

All players tryout, and is usually just a formality for returning players. It’s not very often I’ve seen a returning player get cut. There should be conversations before tryouts for that sort of thing.

I’ve also seen coaches ask for commitments for the next season prior to tryouts.

Don't get too comfortable. There are quite a few coaches who might cut a current player should the next shiny thing in the same position come along at tryouts.

ETA: True except for coaches' daughters, of course!
